Odeo — What’s new for podcast fans and creators

Ok, I’m not keen on pink and black as a color scheme, but this
looks like its going to be a hot site nonetheless.

Odeo Syncr

Right now it’s a really nice interface for organizing podcast subscriptions, plus a more stable syncing tool than iPodder, but it looks like they’re also going to offer web and phone based podcast creation tools.

As the trend goes, it’s going to be invitation only for a while, so drop me a line if you want an invite, and I’ll spread some around when I get em.

If you want to check if your podcast is in there, or if you want to add yours, I can help you out too. Just comment with your podcast info and appropriate tags.

On a related note, podscope is another newish site for podcast fans. It lets you search the actual content of podcasts. It’s rather limited at the moment, but still a neat innovation.

If you want to add your podcast to podscope, here’s the link to the submission form.

Mike Filsaime’s Getting a Little Frazzled

An email yesterday to all InstantBuzz members calls on
anyone who cares to write to Mike Chen and let him know
he’s dragging his a$$.

InstantBuzz.com can be back up any day if Mike Chen
would just reply to 8 emails and voice mails I leave him…..

I spoke to Godaddy, all they need is for Mike Chen to
call them , (yes just call them) and pay the $80 fine and
the site could have been back up on….

Remember, all Mike Chen has to do is call 1 person
at Godaddy with the phone number I emailed him over
8 times and the site will go on INSTANTLY.

The forum where users can post their messages has a splendid amount of vitriol for both Mikes involved. What a great example of how not to handle a site take-over.

Was Mike F. right to share his frustration to 45,000 IB members? Who knows. Mike Chen probably does deserve to have his reputation dragged through the mud, but it doesn’t seem to be doing IB members any good.

Mike F should have had an attorney involved within two days.

And frankly, he should have had an attorney deal with the transfer to begin with. If all the is were dotted and ts were crossed when the business was purchased, this wouldn’t have happened.

Hypothetically….

The real money from writing articles might involve the Copyright office. Simply write a whole stack of articles, submit them to the Copyright office as a compilation ($30), then submit to article directories with your terms — that the resource box must be included and links should be activated, etc.

Then wait for webmasters to ignore your terms and litigate… or threaten to and settle for $1,000-$5,000 per infraction.

I’m not sure you could use a pre-paid legal service for something like that, but if they’ll do it, you’re only down $20 a month or so for your legal bills too.

Just a thought I had when considering how the RIAA operates.

Cory Doctorow’s new book for sale in a developing country far from you…

Cory Doctorow is a guy who is always pushing the leading edge of what publishing and copyright could and should be. His new book is out, and like his other two books, he’s released it under a Creative Commons license.

You can send it around, paste it into a chat, beam it to a friend’s PDA, or print out a chapter to hand out in the university common room. Like Woody Guthrie said, “Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do.”

Since he’s done the same with his other books, this really isn’t news.

What is interesting is that this book is released under the new Creative Commons Developing Nations License, which basically says that anyone from a low-income country can republish, resell, make a movie or audiobook or translation of his book without paying a cent in royalties.

This sounds, I think, like a pretty neat idea. After all, if you want to export capitalism and whatnot to developing nations, it helps if you give them something cool to sell. Like the old saying goes.. give a man a fish…. you know the rest. But teaching a man to fish doesn’t do much good if you take the fishing rod with you when you go.

But then again, if I were to write the license, I’d exclude government workers/leaders and their friends and family. You just know this idea will die a humiliating death if Robert Mugabe and his friends start up a publishing company.
