Yard Sale

This is a two slice toaster.Image via WikipediaToday, I am sitting outside watching a few tables at a community yard sale.

Usually, I must admit, I am a ‘throw it out’ kind of gal, but I suppose this is somewhat better for the environment.

The last time I participated in any sort of junk sale was when my parents moved out of their home and into an apartment. I hope I don’t get wrangled into anything like it for another 10 years. Tire kickers and bargain hunters are not my favorite people to deal with.

What I was quite pleased and pleasantly surprised to discover, however, is that my 5-year-old son is a natural pitchman. He was as happy as a clam selling toasters and jewelery to unsuspecting passers-by. I had no idea he could be so assertive and bold. And he asked for the sale every time.

He came home with enough money to buy a few Lego sets, and enough confidence to make me feel incredibly good about the whole experience… tirekickers and all.

My Mom and I had a garage sale on March 15th before the Texas heat hit us like today (it’s 91′). It was her very first and it was an experience for the both of us.

I don’t really know why I am so turned off by selling to the public. I was dreading it every step of the way. Although I did have a bunch of stuff of value that I just did not want to give away, yet.

We only went 1 day (absolute must!) from 7am, and by noon we had nothing left. A swarm of bargain hunters bought everything in sight.

It’s funny though, people don’t buy what you think will sell and buy what you think won’t sell. It’s weird.

I blanketed the area with about 25 signs and placed a free ad on Craigslist. I did not want to place a newspaper ad and start $25 in the hole.

All together we made about $360. Not for 5+ hours work. And nowadays I am doing what I can to make extra money on the side.

For example I send my UPCs from the products I buy for free food vouchers. (ref: no coupon clipping ebook-google it) And I have started an intern program to hopefully learn how to make an online income (ref: OnlineBusinessInternProgram.com).

These days every extra dollar really helps.

A budding salesman in the making! You must be proud of your boy.

I was wondering what you meant by “asked for the sale every time”?

So how much did the yard sale make? :)
