Entrecard Dropping with Google Chrome
I decided, after downloading and fiddling with Google’s new browser this evening, that a pretty good test of its mettle would be to do some Entrecard dropping with it.
First, I should note that every site I went to rendered just fine. I’m sure that makes all the web designers in the world heave a big sigh of relief. The last thing anyone needed was another set of odd CSS hacks they needed to incorporate into their designs.
It was also fast. Although there’s no Linky-like feature in Chrome, and I had to individually middle-click each link to load it in a new tab, there was absolutely no delay or stuttering while I did so. All the new tabs loaded happily on the screen. Unlike Firefox, which has scrolling arrows when you get too many tabs, Chrome just makes the tabs smaller, so when you’ve got lots loaded, it looks like a goofy looking mountain range at the top of the screen.
The biggest thing I noticed was that, even while the last sites were still loading, there was no delay when clicking the widget. You clicked the word Drop, and the next instant the Thanks, or Awesome was there.
Just to make sure this wasn’t just caused by a superfast Entrecard server tonight, I dropped my last 50 cards in Firefox. There’s a 6-8 second period where the yellow bar goes black in Firefox when some of the tabs have not finished loading.
The other thing I noticed is that when a script on someone’s site causes major malfunctions, Firefox closes completely, while Chrome just crashes the tab and keeps everything else running normally.

Actually, it doesn’t crash the tab, it just makes it unhappy. You gotta love those Google guys. Even a crashed web page becomes cute.
Finally, the extra screen space with Chrome might have also sped up the process, since I could see more of the widgets above the fold.
Overall, I really like Chrome. I am just hoping to see lots of cool add-ons like Firefox has.

Nice and thorough review.
I did download Chrome on our Dell at home but since I work on a Mac I haven’t used it.
But the fact that it is faster makes me look forward to the Mac release!

Okay. I guess I’ll have to go and download Chrome, since everyone is doing it.

Yes, you’ve tempted me too. I like the idea of no delay or stuttering when loading multiple tabs. I open a good few at once then have to go away and make a cup of tea while everything loads, so that I don’t lose patience.

Hi. I read a few reviews about Google new toy but I haven´t used it yet. i´m very used to Firefox and I´m a bit lazy to learn new stuff, specially with browsers. I was wondering if it was faster than Firefox when dropping Entrecards. When I load 10 sites, it goes so slow.
Glad I read your article, now I know it´s worth trying. Thanks for sharing.
Best Regards. Mizé.

I like Chrome so far. It performs faster than Firefox on a traditional CPU, and when I use it on a Dual Core machine, it’s significantly faster. I guess that since each tab runs as a separate process, Chrome may be optimized for multi-core systems.
I have had two issues with it in Entrecard, though. When I have a bunch of tabs open, Flash scripts hang and crash.
The other problem is that it randomly logs me out of Entrecard. Firefox would do this too on occasion, but it’s pretty much a daily occurrence with Chrome.

I may just have to use chrome for dropping other then that I really haven’t found much use for Google’s new naked browser. It just a browser only stripped down…

I use Chrome on my MSI Wind which isn’t the most powerful notebook out there and it handles it quite well under Vista.
I like your site. Pretty damn informative.

Entrecard dropping as a test? Thats a smart way of testing the new browser.
I have downloaded chrome but havent started using it. I have seen many reviews of chrome, but yours is a really practical way of testing a browser. Maybe I will start using chrome now!

I’ve got Chrome and while I like it as a browser, there are just some Firefox add-ons I’d rather be using. I’ve never thought about using it for Entrecard dropping but I am going to try it out now, the widget delay that you spoke about with Firefox is becoming a hassle.
Nice site btw!

Just thought I would post a follow up to my earlier comment, I’ve since tried using Chrome for my Entrecard dropping and it is great, much better than Firefox!

I tried dropping using chrome and I have to say that I’m quite impressed with its performance. It’s exactly as you have described in your post. Whenever I get a bad site on Firefox it will drop everything and close the browser without any warning. I have to reload each page again and login to entrecard because it keeps logging me out of EC. I have fixed this error on FF before but it mysteriously came back. I’m too lazy to do anything about it right now. I guess I’ll have to use Chrome in my future drops. Thanks
